Chilwell School, Nottingham, UK

This project was to design a device that could be placed in Chilwell school to improve the learning environment. As seeing the lack of shelter being the primary concern from the school children, the design was a free standing lightweight roof structure with the use of ETFE membranes that would be placed in the centre quad area. This could then unite the classrooms from the four sides around the quad and form an area that could promote active learning by incorporating the idea of Montessori teaching method.
The school was built in the post-war period from the popular CLASP, Consortium of Local Authority Special Programme, construction method, each wall or window units would be removed and replaced by energy efficient composites to improve the already poor energy rating of the building.
